OVERVIEW

The Developer Experience team at Instacart is the force multiplier for our 1000+ engineers. We define and build the platforms, tools, and practices that enable Instacart engineers to ship high-quality software faster — from AI-powered code review to build infrastructure, developer onboarding, and local development environments. Our success is measured in developer velocity: how quickly an engineer can take an idea from concept to production.

As a Staff Software Engineer on Developer Experience, you will lead the technical direction for the developer infrastructure that every Instacart engineer relies on. That spans local and remote development environments, CI pipelines and the feedback loop on every commit, pre-production environments that engineers and AI agents can trust, version-control infrastructure, and the AI-powered developer tooling woven through all of it. This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You’ll write code, set architectural direction, and partner across the org to move engineering-wide metrics on developer velocity, CI reliability, and the time it takes to get a change safely into production.

About the Job

  • Lead the technical direction for Instacart’s local and remote development environments, including ephemeral environments, image-based provisioning, health checks, and the developer-facing ergonomics of the inner development loop.
  • Lead the technical direction for our CI pipeline infrastructure and the commit-to-feedback loop, CI reliability, failure diagnostics, flaky-test reduction, and shift-left validation.
  • Own the architecture and evolution of our pre-production environments, including staging stability, service-owner accountability models, and environments that let engineers and AI agents validate changes end-to-end in parallel.
  • Drive the reliability and resilience of our git infrastructure, git operations at monorepo scale, and implement disaster recovery plans.
  • Advance AI-powered developer tooling across the workflow, AI-assisted code review, agentic development workflows, and the platforms that let engineers run many AI sessions in parallel with humans on the loop.
  • Design and drive multi-quarter initiatives that measurably improve developer velocity, CI reliability, pre-production health, and the local development loop.
  • Own the developer experience metrics for the systems you lead: define what “good” looks like, instrument it, and use the data to prioritize investment.
  • Partner with infrastructure, platform, and product engineering teams to roll out platform changes with minimal disruption
  • Set the technical bar for the systems you own on reliability, performance, upgrade cadence, and developer ergonomics.
  • Mentor engineers in the team and the broader engineering org; grow the community of developer infrastructure experts at Instacart.
  • Represent the team in cross-org technical discussions on local development experience, CI/CD, pre-production, and AI-augmented development.

About You

  • A hands-on technical leader who is equally comfortable in a CI pipeline definition, a design doc, a vision document, and a cross-org migration plan.
  • Metrics-driven. You use build times, CI failure rates, pre-production pass rates, feedback-loop latency, and developer feedback to guide where to invest.
  • A multiplier. You make the engineers around you more effective through mentorship, clear technical writing, and pragmatic guidance.
  • Comfortable driving cross-team change. You can build consensus for a migration or a platform shift and see it through to adoption.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software development experience.
  • Deep, hands-on experience operating CI/CD systems at scale (e.g., Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI), including pipeline design, reliability, and performance tuning for large engineering organizations.
  • Experience building or operating local/remote development environments or developer platforms (e.g., ephemeral environments, dev containers, internal PaaS), with a point of view on the inner development loop.
  • Track record of leading cross-team technical initiatives with measurable impact on developer velocity, CI reliability, pre-production stability, or feedback-loop time.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerization (Docker), and orchestration (ECS/Kubernetes or equivalent).
  • Experience with large monorepos and the git infrastructure challenges that come with them.
  • Strong technical leadership: driving direction, mentoring engineers, and influencing without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience owning or evolving a developer environment platform used by a large engineering org.
  • Experience stabilizing pre-production / staging environments at scale, including establishing service-owner accountability and SLAs.
  • Experience with AI-powered developer tooling — AI code review, agentic coding workflows, or platforms that run async agentic work for engineers.
  • Experience defining and instrumenting developer productivity metrics (CI failure rate, feedback-loop time, pre-production pass rate, local dev loop).
  • Experience at high-growth companies operating developer infrastructure for large engineering organizations.

Machine Learning is a cornerstone at Taskrabbit, and we’re looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join our team and lead the next phase of our customer retention strategy. Your Areas of Expertise:

Compensation & Benefits:

At Taskrabbit, our approach to compensation is designed to be competitive, transparent, and equitable. Total compensation consists of base pay + bonus + benefits + perks. The base pay range for this position is $170,000 - $225,000. This range is representative of base pay only, and does not include any other total cash compensation amounts, such as company bonus or benefits. Final offer amounts may vary from the amounts listed above and will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, geography, and level.

Professional Qualifications

About the job

Cosmic AC is Tether Data’s GPU compute and managed inference platform: GPU containers, managed inference endpoints and platform observability, delivered as a self-hosted package on Kubernetes, with a control plane written in JavaScript. The platform is expanding from orchestrating workloads on a managed cluster to owning the full stack on bare-metal GPU infrastructure: a managed Slurm scheduling layer for internal research and model-training teams first, and our own Kubernetes control plane for inference tenancy after that.

The Technical Lead owns the architecture and delivery of that stack and leads the engineering team building it: about twelve engineers across backend, frontend, DevOps, QA and documentation, distributed across Europe and India. The role reports to the Senior Technical Product Manager for Cosmic AC, who owns scope, sequencing and partner commitments; the Technical Lead owns architecture, implementation and delivery plans, line-manages the engineers, and is the primary technical interface to our infrastructure partners.

This is a hands-on infrastructure leadership role with a fixed delivery window in its first six months. It is not a research role, not a pure Kubernetes SRE role, and not a management-only role.

Responsibilities

Architecture. Own the platform architecture end to end: architecture proposals, high-level and low-level designs, driven through review and kept current as the baseline.

Team leadership. Lead and line-manage a distributed team across backend (Node.js), frontend (React), DevOps, QA and documentation: engineering standards, code and design review, release gates, one-to-ones, growth and performance input.

Bare-metal GPU scheduling layer. Design, build and operate a managed Slurm service for research users: controller and accounting, partitions and login nodes, node onboarding and acceptance, driver and CUDA baseline and upgrades, stalled-job and node-health detection, drain and autohealing, storage visibility, identity and isolation.

Kubernetes control plane and GPU enablement. Own cluster bootstrap and lifecycle on partner-provided bare metal, NVIDIA GPU Operator and Network Operator, VM-based GPU isolation (KubeVirt and VFIO), and day-2 operations: upgrades, backup and recovery, node replacement.

Managed inference at scale. Serving architecture, multi-GPU and multi-node parallelism, autoscaling, request routing and endpoint reliability; confidential-compute-capable capacity for sensitive workloads.

Observability and operations. Metrics, logging, alerting and SLOs across control plane, GPU fleet and application tiers; incident response and post-incident review; an on-call model a small team can sustain.

Partners and vendors. Primary technical interface to infrastructure partners and vendors: turning requirements into written specifications and acceptance tests, running escalations to closure, and providing technical input to capacity planning and hardware sourcing.

Internal consumers. Work directly with research, model-training and product teams to translate their workloads into platform requirements, and broker capacity when it is short.

Hiring. Complete the platform team and set the technical bar for the engineers who join it.

Requirements

Must have

  • Experience. Eight or more years of hands-on engineering, including at least three leading teams that build and operate infrastructure platforms other teams depend on. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Slurm at scale, hands on. Has run slurmctld and slurmdbd for real users: partitions, QoS and priority, accounting, prolog and epilog, node health scripting, upgrades with jobs on the system. Ideally has operated an HPC or GPU training cluster for a research population.

  • GPU fleet operation on bare metal. NVIDIA driver and CUDA lifecycle, Fabric Manager and NVSwitch behaviour on SXM systems, DCGM-based health and utilisation, MIG, node burn-in and acceptance.

  • High-performance interconnects. InfiniBand fabric and subnet configuration, RDMA, SR-IOV, and diagnosing multi-node NCCL performance problems.

  • Linux systems depth. Kernel modules and drivers, PCIe passthrough and vfio-pci, cgroups and namespaces, performance tuning for compute-heavy workloads.

  • Production Kubernetes operation, not just deployment: control plane, upgrades, CNI and CSI, operators and custom controllers, multi-tenancy design.

  • HPC storage and data movement. Shared filesystems (VAST, Lustre, NFS), node-local NVMe caching, distributing large model weights and datasets across many nodes.

  • Observability and operations. Prometheus, Grafana and Loki or equivalents, SLOs, incident response and post-incident review.

  • Working fluency in JavaScript and Node.js sufficient to review a control plane, CLI and worker services with authority and to make architecture decisions on them. Not a feature-development requirement.

  • A shipped platform with real users. A multi-tenant IaaS or PaaS, or a research computing service: resource isolation, quotas, usage metering, and user-facing API and CLI surfaces.

  • Leadership that stays in the code. People management across time zones, cross-track review, written architecture decisions with alternatives recorded, and the ability to tell a partner or an executive no with reasons.

  • Excellent written and spoken English. Most partner and leadership work happens in writing.

  • Location. Fully remote, based between UTC and UTC+5:30 so the working day overlaps both Europe and India, where the team and its partners work. Occasional travel to partner sites and team events.

In this position you will:

  • Technical Delivery

    • Craft new features that help users more easily navigate government services and receive a dignified experience, taking on the hardest and highest-leverage problems across your domain and modeling the standard other engineers build toward.
    • Drive solutions to technical problems that are ambiguous or undefined, weighing tradeoffs across competing priorities at a discipline-wide scale.
    • Own architecture and data-modeling decisions for systems that span multiple services or teams, weighing tradeoffs across competing priorities: speed vs. maintainability, the familiar tool vs. the right one, ideal vs. feasible.
    • Work iteratively to prove out approaches, then engineer what works into durable, reusable capabilities (shared services, libraries, and AI-enabled components) that other teams build on.
    • Support Engineering’s culture of writing by producing documentation, technical decision records, and learning materials that engineers across multiple teams rely on.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship

    • Set and document technical direction for your domain, anticipating cross-team challenges before they become blockers and explaining the reasoning behind hard calls.
    • Mentor Staff and Senior Software Engineers on technical judgment and engineering practice, and create conditions for them to grow into unfamiliar problem spaces.
    • Partner with Engineering Managers, Directors, and cross-functional peers to translate technology, policy, and organizational trends into technical strategy.
    • Set shared engineering standards and reference architectures for your domain, and drive their adoption through review, reference implementations, and example
    • Share what works across projects back into engineering-wide practices, closing gaps between teams’ approaches.
  • Organizational Technical Strategy

    • Partner with Engineering Managers, Directors, and cross-functional peers to translate technology, policy, and organizational trends into technical strategy.
    • Explore emerging technologies and engineering approaches, from new frameworks and infrastructure to AI-enabled product capabilities, and recommend what to scale, adjust, or stop based on your evaluation
    • Represent Engineering’s technical perspective in cross-discipline planning and decision-making.

About you:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with deep expertise in system architecture, data modeling, web technologies, and API design.
  • Demonstrated track record of defining technical standards or patterns that were adopted across multiple teams.
  • Experience framing and solving ambiguous, previously undefined technical problems, and building solutions others can adopt.
  • Expertise across multiple languages, frameworks, and tech stacks, with the demonstrated ability to ramp quickly into unfamiliar ones.
  • Demonstrated ability to use AI coding tools judiciously, validating and refining generated code for quality, and helping establish sound norms for its use across teams is needed for this specific role; organizationally, a curiosity about emerging AI tools and a commitment to using them responsibly and effectively
  • Experience with Agile software development models like Scrum, XP, TDD, or BDD.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership across team boundaries: setting direction and guiding sound decision-making in constrained or ambiguous contexts at a multi-team scale.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and IaC tooling.
  • Experience collaborating across disciplines and mentoring engineers on technical craft and professional growth.
  • Truly excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to translate complex technical tradeoffs for non-technical and cross-functional audiences.

About the Model Authoring team

Model Authoring owns the products our customers use to write and manage their pricing models: the model developer experience and our actuarial agent. An actuary might start with an Excel-based rater and finish with a Python model that has been reviewed, approved and is pricing live business. Our job is to make every step of that credible enough to trust. The team is distributed across our Warsaw and London offices.

As the Staff Product Engineer, you will help set the team’s technical direction. This is an individual contributor role, but influence is a large part of it: you’ll help define the standards the team works to, raise the technical bar across pods, and own the interfaces where our problems meet those of teams elsewhere in Technology. You’ll be expected to move fast and start shaping technical conversations early. We work in an AI-native way, and you’ll help define and evolve what that means here.

What you’ll be doing

Establish a set of engineering standards across the Model Authoring pods. The standards are documented and actively referenced in code review, with new pod work conforming by default.

Set and own the technical direction for the team’s shared enablers, including how we represent and persist models, the model registry, secure context access, and shared agentic infrastructure.

Establish the technical interfaces between Model Authoring and other parts of the business. Dependencies with other teams are agreed, documented, and progressing without needing to be brokered by someone else.

Work hands-on on the hardest problems in the stream. This is not an advisory role: we would expect you in the code where the risk is highest.

Help define how we work in an AI-native way. Which parts of model development and of our own engineering we hand to agents, what stays human, and what evidence we need before trusting either.

Visibly lift the engineers around you. You’re sought out for design input across pods, and there’s at least one engineer whose growth is clearly attributable to your support.

What you’ll need to have done

Worked in an AI-native environment, and genuinely want to keep doing so. You’ve used AI or agentic tools in your own engineering workflow, introduced or experimented with them, and have a real view on what’s worked and what hasn’t.

Been product-focused rather than purely technical. You understand who your users are, where their pain points are, and how your technical decisions connect to commercial outcomes.

Set technical direction while navigating genuine ambiguity. A proven track record of owning architecture in a domain with no established playbook, and making clear calls on imperfect information rather than deferring them.

Owned a significant technical challenge or service end to end, with the depth to walk through it in detail - the trade-offs, the contracts, the things you’d do differently.

Influenced across teams. You can hold a position under challenge, genuinely listen to pushback, and persuade others - not just present your own view and hope it lands.

Worked effectively across distributed teams - this role spans our Warsaw and London offices, so you’ll need to be comfortable building relationships and influence across both.

Nice to have

Developer experience work, ideally having built tools for developers or - in our case - actuaries. This doesn’t have to be your company’s core product; internal developer experience initiatives count too.

About the job

Cosmic AC is Tether Data’s GPU compute and managed inference platform: GPU containers, managed inference endpoints and platform observability, delivered as a self-hosted package on Kubernetes, with a control plane written in JavaScript. The platform is expanding from orchestrating workloads on a managed cluster to owning the full stack on bare-metal GPU infrastructure: a managed Slurm scheduling layer for internal research and model-training teams first, and our own Kubernetes control plane for inference tenancy after that.

The Technical Lead owns the architecture and delivery of that stack and leads the engineering team building it: about twelve engineers across backend, frontend, DevOps, QA and documentation, distributed across Europe and India. The role reports to the Senior Technical Product Manager for Cosmic AC, who owns scope, sequencing and partner commitments; the Technical Lead owns architecture, implementation and delivery plans, line-manages the engineers, and is the primary technical interface to our infrastructure partners.

This is a hands-on infrastructure leadership role with a fixed delivery window in its first six months. It is not a research role, not a pure Kubernetes SRE role, and not a management-only role.

Responsibilities

Architecture. Own the platform architecture end to end: architecture proposals, high-level and low-level designs, driven through review and kept current as the baseline.

Team leadership. Lead and line-manage a distributed team across backend (Node.js), frontend (React), DevOps, QA and documentation: engineering standards, code and design review, release gates, one-to-ones, growth and performance input.

Bare-metal GPU scheduling layer. Design, build and operate a managed Slurm service for research users: controller and accounting, partitions and login nodes, node onboarding and acceptance, driver and CUDA baseline and upgrades, stalled-job and node-health detection, drain and autohealing, storage visibility, identity and isolation.

Kubernetes control plane and GPU enablement. Own cluster bootstrap and lifecycle on partner-provided bare metal, NVIDIA GPU Operator and Network Operator, VM-based GPU isolation (KubeVirt and VFIO), and day-2 operations: upgrades, backup and recovery, node replacement.

Managed inference at scale. Serving architecture, multi-GPU and multi-node parallelism, autoscaling, request routing and endpoint reliability; confidential-compute-capable capacity for sensitive workloads.

Observability and operations. Metrics, logging, alerting and SLOs across control plane, GPU fleet and application tiers; incident response and post-incident review; an on-call model a small team can sustain.

Partners and vendors. Primary technical interface to infrastructure partners and vendors: turning requirements into written specifications and acceptance tests, running escalations to closure, and providing technical input to capacity planning and hardware sourcing.

Internal consumers. Work directly with research, model-training and product teams to translate their workloads into platform requirements, and broker capacity when it is short.

Hiring. Complete the platform team and set the technical bar for the engineers who join it.

Requirements

Must have

  • Experience. Eight or more years of hands-on engineering, including at least three leading teams that build and operate infrastructure platforms other teams depend on. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Slurm at scale, hands on. Has run slurmctld and slurmdbd for real users: partitions, QoS and priority, accounting, prolog and epilog, node health scripting, upgrades with jobs on the system. Ideally has operated an HPC or GPU training cluster for a research population.

  • GPU fleet operation on bare metal. NVIDIA driver and CUDA lifecycle, Fabric Manager and NVSwitch behaviour on SXM systems, DCGM-based health and utilisation, MIG, node burn-in and acceptance.

  • High-performance interconnects. InfiniBand fabric and subnet configuration, RDMA, SR-IOV, and diagnosing multi-node NCCL performance problems.

  • Linux systems depth. Kernel modules and drivers, PCIe passthrough and vfio-pci, cgroups and namespaces, performance tuning for compute-heavy workloads.

  • Production Kubernetes operation, not just deployment: control plane, upgrades, CNI and CSI, operators and custom controllers, multi-tenancy design.

  • HPC storage and data movement. Shared filesystems (VAST, Lustre, NFS), node-local NVMe caching, distributing large model weights and datasets across many nodes.

  • Observability and operations. Prometheus, Grafana and Loki or equivalents, SLOs, incident response and post-incident review.

  • Working fluency in JavaScript and Node.js sufficient to review a control plane, CLI and worker services with authority and to make architecture decisions on them. Not a feature-development requirement.

  • A shipped platform with real users. A multi-tenant IaaS or PaaS, or a research computing service: resource isolation, quotas, usage metering, and user-facing API and CLI surfaces.

  • Leadership that stays in the code. People management across time zones, cross-track review, written architecture decisions with alternatives recorded, and the ability to tell a partner or an executive no with reasons.

  • Excellent written and spoken English. Most partner and leadership work happens in writing.

  • Location. Fully remote, based between UTC and UTC+5:30 so the working day overlaps both Europe and India, where the team and its partners work. Occasional travel to partner sites and team events.

Desirable

  • Slurm operators on Kubernetes (Soperator, Slinky) or Kubernetes-native schedulers (Kueue, Volcano, KAI, Kubeflow Trainer).

  • Modern serving stacks (vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM): parallelism strategies, quantisation trade-offs, GPU memory planning.

  • VM and container isolation for multi-tenant GPU compute (KubeVirt, Kata Containers, QEMU and KVM, Firecracker); confidential computing (Intel TDX, AMD SEV-SNP, NVIDIA confidential-compute mode).

  • Cluster API and kubeadm, Cilium, NVSentinel-class autohealing, infrastructure as code and GitOps.

  • Time on the operator side of a GPU cloud, a national or university HPC centre, or an AI lab’s platform team.

  • Peer-to-peer or distributed-systems background.

  • Experience with a hardware provider who provisions but does not operate, and turning that relationship into a written contract with acceptance tests.
